About

The client, Studio Palmano, is a London urban garden design firm who needed re-branding and a new logo as well as a new portfolio website and a blog.

Jill Palmano's project was a perfect fit for me: she needed a stylish, colourful new identity and an engaging website for her business, as well as solid consultancy and advice on how to write for the web and establish her online presence.
I advised her on a web strategy focussing on her niche blog, a journal on how to create idyllic garden spaces in small urban environments, and taking it into social media: Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

I chose to use the extremely reliable Genesis framework for this Wordpress site, with a parallax scrolling effect on the very colourful home page that tells the visual story of all the aspects of the business: the completed projects, the proposals, the planting and the blog.

The 3 brand colours are used throughout: a bright green, a dark turquoise and a flowery pink. Each section of the parallax scroller gives access to the different areas of the site via a button as well as image-based menus (built with a jquery plugin), making the user experience as easy and pleasurable as possible. Finding the best way to display the image-rich portfolio sections was very important – I chose a masonry gallery that is beautifully responsive, highly customisable and can go full width.

As par for the course with all my Wordpress projects, I also installed a number of essential plugins and trained the client on best-practice Wordpress maintenance.

The third section of the parallax-scrolling home page, with an image-based menu linking directly to the specific portfolio item page and gallery. The button takes the visitor to the relevant portfolio section, gathering all the items in the visual menu ('Planting' in this case). Hovering on the image reveals a pink cover with name of project and link.

The About page, with a beautiful, colour-coordinated urban meadow in the background.

A project page, with the masonry gallery. All projects and pages are also accessible from the top navigation menu.

The gallery when clicked on opens a beautiful lightbox.

Role

Jill Palmano trusted me with designing her new identity as well as the whole website, user experience and taxonomy. I also trained her in how to best write for the web, how to optimise images, use Wordpress, maintain a Wordpress site and blog and make the most of social media. The site is only just launched so there's not much on that yet! More to come soon
