About

The brief initially originated from an ISTD (International Society of Typographic Designers) brief. The student brief requested budding designers to create a product or service that used typography as the main transportation and focus of an idea.

Taking my knowledge and interest of user experience and interface design, I decided to create an app. And typography being a language, I thought about the current state of affairs in the language learning app market and noticed there was a gap when it came to social interactions when learning a language online or in-app.

Learning a language isn’t easy. Especially when you don’t know any native speakers of the language you’re trying to learn. Or even more if you don’t know any teachers near you.

Lingua connects users to others who want to learn their language. Straight away you’ve made new friends, met native speakers and can test each other online through the use of different games, tools and levels. Of course, the problem of both sides being able to speak the language of the other is there if you want to meet up for a coffee or a beer, so Lingua can rate your level of fluency in another language and match you to others based on that data.

Social, interactive behaviour is key when learning something new, Lingua is based on this philosophy.
